IT Challenge: Email as a Service?

Asked by Jenny - May 30, 2010

What are the pros and cons of running a company's email application via software as a service? Companies must be able to trust a vendor's ability to provide reliable, secure email services and infrastructure. Are there benchmarks for comparing and testing the security features of vendor's offerings?

I'm actually curious about a complicating factor: Given products like Exchange, that combine email with group calendaring, task tracking, workflow, and other functions, is the question of email as a service more or less complicated? When I was running a small company, we initially broke out email and ran other collaboration functions on a separate server, but ultimately gave in to the convenience of running everything on Exchange.

Of course, there are many options for buying Exchange as a service, from Microsoft and a wide variety of other providers. I suppose my question is really about whether email is still seen best as a stand-alone service, or as part of a larger suite. What do you think?
