What’s best route to secure remote access?

Asked by Claykin via Small Netbuilder Forums - March 11, 2010

Our office has multiple users who want remote access to a database system. One possible complication is that we have multiple IP addresses. We don't have a full-time IT person, so the system has to be easy to set up and administrate. I also want to control who has access. Finally, I like the router/gateway we have, which doesn't have VPN endpoint capability. So I don't want to buy a new router. What's the best way to do this? If I went with a service like GoToMyPC, can it be centrally administrated? Or should I swallow hard and get a VPN/SSL gateway router?

Yes
  • You don't say what software you're running on the server and clients. If running Server 2008, and Windows 7, or have plans to upgrade soon, then the Direct Access feature looks tailor made for you.

If not, I would recommend the VPN.
